Varsity Football Wins the Sunshine State Athletic Conference Championship

The Varsity Football team wins historic first championship. The Master’s Academy Eagle football team completed an incredible odyssey Saturday night by defeating Seffner Christian 35-17 to win the Sunshine State Athletic Conference football title.  One year ago the Eagles won just three regular season games and finished the year with 14 players.  Thanks to a committed group of Seniors and an equally talented underclass, the Eagles finished 8 and 3 (not counting another victory in their pre-season game) and won their final 5 games enroute to the championship. Brandon Dickens had another 3 touchdown night, scoring his first on a 6 yard run to give TMA an early 7-0 lead.  However, Seffner countered with an impressive 68 yard drive to knot the score at 7 all.  The Eagles answered with a 3 yard Seth Kearney run to lead 14-7.  The lead would stretch to 21-7 as Dickens found pay dirt again from yard out.  It was fitting that he scored as the big strike in the drive was a 62 yard reception by him from Senior Quarterback Zach Lowe.  TMA led at the half 21-10.  Cole Iturrioz got into the act for the Eagle’s fourth score from 2 yards out to stretch the lead to 28-10.  Seffner wouldn’t go away, however, as they mounted another impressive drive to cut the lead to 28-17.  The game grew even tighter as Seffner then recovered an onside kick. However, 5 plays into the most important drive of the game, ball hawking linebacker Wade Connett recovered a fumble in the backfield to end the threat.  Brandon Dickens then drove the final nail in the coffin with an eye-popping 46 yard dash to the Seffner 6 yard line.  Dickens appropriately slammed it in from there.  At that point for the 2012 title chase, school was out.  The clock ran out and pandemonium swept the field as the Eagles celebrated at length after the game.   Seth Kearney was named the game’s MVP.  Coach Vance would be quick to say that every Eagle football player was an MVP on this night.  TMA won their first football championship of any type scoring 34 points per game while allowing 14.  Coach Vance summed it up by saying “I’m very proud of the players and all of the hard work they put in.  This championship is about them and I hope the entire TMA community is as proud of them as I am.”   TMA….2012 SSAC football champions!   Read more ...
